Responsible Travel

Responsible travel is about choosing destinations and tourism products based on ethical, political, cultural and environmental considerations. It requires operators, governments, local people and travellers to take responsibility and take action to make tourism more sustainable.

Tanja Lagoon Camp has always been a product based on social, cultural and environmental responsibility. Gathering wealth is not our motivation for being in business. Our inspiration comes from the desire to live here and care for this beautiful land and provide opportunities for ourselves and others to connect with the earth. We see our product as a force for good.

 Our Mission

  • To provide accessible and inclusive opportunities for quality nature immersion, environmental stewardship and inspiration for sustainable living
  • To minimise the negative impact of tourism and create a positive influence on the natural and cultural environments in which we operate for the long-term
  • To be a social enterprise role modelling transparency, accountability and ethical choices in our business governance

Conservation

Since first moving onto the land we have been on a constant journey of restoring native habitat. Developing Tanja Lagoon Camp has created even more incentive to restore habitat so that our guests can experience a vibrant community of Australian native flora and fauna.

We are strongly committed to creating a safe environment for the native wildlife. With support from the Local Land Services we have created a substantial wildlife corridor to allow native animals, including the vulnerable Eastern Long-Nosed Potoroo, to safely travel across the property and access important habitat within the neighbouring National Park.

We are strongly committed to creating a safe environment for the native wildlife so we do not allow predatory non-native animals on the property. Carbon offsetting

  • Tourism is responsible for roughly 8% of the world’s carbon emissions (Nature Climate Change 2018). We believe that we need to calculate, reduce and offset our emissions. TLC has adopted the following strategies and are on a continuous journey to find even more avenues to offsetting our emissions:
  • Planting over 7,000 thousand native trees
  • Only working with international travel agents who are offsetting the carbon emissions from their guests international flights
  • Hybrid work vehicle
  • Enough solar and battery power to run the entire camp
  • Selecting local products as much as possible to reduce transport emissions
  • Employ staff who live locally to reduce travelling to work emissions
  • Being part of the conversation and staying up to date with current information by regularly attending climate change workshops, training and conferences

If you are interested in calculating, reducing and offsetting your own carbon emissions we recommend ecologi to help you on your journey.

Ecotourism Accreditation

In our first years of operation it was an important operational goal to achieve Ecotourism Australia certification. We have been an ecotourism accredited business since 2017. We have Advanced Ecotourism accreditation.
